John B Fairfax, of Rural Press, is poised to enter a $A3 billion merger with the company his family started, John Fairfax Holdings. The group will be renamed Fairfax Media in early 2007. It is 19 years since John B Fairfax was ousted from John Fairfax by a family coup. The saga is a long one, full of twists and turns for the Fairfax family. John B Fairfax is keen to see the family newspaper keep its powerful role as guardian of the public's right to know, to keep politicians honest.
