Wanted: 70,000 workers.

Australasian Business Intelligence, December, 2006

Dec 13, 2006 (Australian Mining - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australia's minerals industry is predicted to grow by 76 over a decade, an increase that will require over 70,000 new jobs. The forecast was made in "Staffing the Supercycle: Labour Force Outlook in the Minerals Sector 2005-2015", a report issued by the Department of Education, Science and Training in November 2006. Around 42,000 of these positions will arise in Western Australia, with another 15,000 coming up in Queensland, although South Australia and New South Wales are also expected to grow. The report also discusses the shortage of skilled staff ahead of the rise in demand for labour, highlighting the need for this to be addressed by the industry and the government.
