[2202] Does the AAT (at least in tax matters) need review?
Australasian Business Intelligence, December, 2006
Byline: Robert Richards
Dec 08, 2006 (Weekly Tax Bulletin - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The aim of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) is to review decisions made by various government agencies and officials. However, there is a concern that the AAT is not serving its purpose, at least as far as matters concerning the Australian Taxation Office and other tax bodies. Its proceedings do not seem to be as informal as they are intended to be under the "Administrative Appeals Tribunal Act 1975", nor are they are very economical. Its method of conducting disputes is also open to question, and it may be time for a review of the AAT and its treatment of tax disputes.
