Banks take steam out of rally.

Dec 05, 2006 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The benchmark S&P/ASX200 Index closed slightly higher on 5 December 2006. Strong gains in the resources sector saw the index close at 5,426.5, up 1.6 points. Mid-sized miners Zinifex and Minara Resources touched record highs during the day before closing at $A18.39 and $A6.66 respectively. Giants BHP Billiton ($A26.31) and Rio Tinto ($A76.29) also gained, but banks and oil stocks fell. Caltex slipped $A0.94 to $A21.81. The Seven Network gained $A0.31 to $A10.81 after revealing that it recently bought a stake in John Fairfax Holdings. Fairfax touched a record $A5.30 before closing at $A5.21.
