Dec 07, 2006 (The Sydney Morning Herald - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australian newspaper groups John Fairfax Holdings and Rural Press are to merge, bringing to fruition long-harboured plans. While the move is not solely triggered by the Federal Government's media sector ownership law reforms, these have made the transaction possible by recently boosting Fairfax's share price. A deal could therefore be constructed that will let the company use its scrip more effectively. It also appears that the owners of Rural Press are now happy to cede some control to the new management at Fairfax whereas they may have had reservations in the past.
