Fairfax boss was troubled by left-leaning editorial culture.(Editorial)

Jan 23, 2007 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Fred Hilmer, former CEO of Australian newspaper publishing group Fairfax Media, is about to launch a book about his tenure. "The Fairfax Experience" will argue that journalists at the company's titles, such as "The Age" and "The Sydney Morning Herald", consider themselves advocates rather than impartial observers, and that there is a strong politically left bias in editorial decisions. Hilmer, who is now the University of New South Wales's vice-chancellor and a director of property developer Westfield, says the average return to stockholders of 9 per annum when he was at Fairfax is an adequate track record.
