Remote switch combats blackouts.

Australasian Business Intelligence, January, 2007

Jan 02, 2007 (Australasian Science - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australian company, Saab Systems, has developed a switching device that will avoid power blackouts. The Direct Load Control System (DLCS) allows electricity network managers to briefly turn off air conditioners, hot water systems and swimming pool pumps when power demand is very high. The DLCS is designed to smooth out energy demand, but will also reduce total energy usage. A trial is being conducted in 2,000 houses in Adelaide over the summer of 2006-07.
