RMIT axes maths jobs as enrolments decline.
Australasian Business Intelligence, February, 2007
Byline: David Rood
Feb 06, 2007 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) -- RMIT University in Melbourne has made eight staff in the School of Mathematical & Geospatial Science redundant. The move, which includes four maths lecturers, was linked by David Mainwaring, acting pro vice-chancellor for science, engineering and technology, to a drop in applications for course places in maths and statistics courses by students. The job cuts have been criticised by the National Tertiary Education Union as well as by education experts pointing out that there already is an undersupply of high school maths teachers, and that statistics and maths at tertiary level is in serious jeopardy.
