Feb 19, 2007 (The Sydney Morning Herald - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Queensland Government's proposal to redirect water hundreds of kilometres is being criticised on economic and ecological grounds. Australia's Minister for the Environment, Malcolm Turnbull, said on 19 February 2007 that the proposal would not be economically sound unless the receivers of the water would pay high prices due to the difficulty in transporting such a heavy resource. Professor Richard Kingsford from the University of New South Wales has emphasised the ecological disruption that would occur from the diversion in terms of water flow, pests, weeds and invasive species.
