No rent rises on struggle street.
Australasian Business Intelligence, March, 2007
Byline: Robert Harley
Mar 05, 2007 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Many low-income Australians experience difficulty in meeting rent payments. A survey by Terry Burke, of Victoria's Swinburne University of Technology, has found that about 57 per cent of low to moderate-income renters in Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales pay over 40 per cent of their income on housing. They would not be able to pay higher rents. This would limit the capacity of landlords to raise rents, despite the tight rental market. Burke says Australia is already experiencing a rental crisis.
