Joyce takes aim at Woolworths, Coles.
Australasian Business Intelligence, March, 2007
Mar 16, 2007 (Inside Retailing - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Senator Barnaby Joyce has expressed his unhappiness about the favourable rental deals being enjoyed by Coles and Woolworths. The National Party senator told the Australian Parliament recently that such deals, struck between the two large retailers and shopping centres, made it very hard for smaller retailers to compete with them. Quoting figures from the Southern Sydney Retailers Association, Joyce noted that Woolworths pays rent of $A218 per sq metre at Westfield Parramatta, while Prime Quality Metres has to pay $A1,529 per sq metre. Similarly, Coles is only charged $A245 per sq metre by Westfield Liverpool, compared with rent of $A1,338 per sq metre for Bush's Meats.
