Brown coal plan a nod to dirty power: expert.

Australasian Business Intelligence, March, 2007

Byline: Wendy Frew

Mar 12, 2007 (The Sydney Morning Herald - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Funding for a brown-coal fired power station will make Australia more reliant on "dirty" energy, critics say. On 12 March 2007, the Australian Government announced a grant of $A100 million to HRL for the construction of a power station in Victoria. The plant will use technology that will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide generated and make it easier to store it underground. However, Dr Mark Diesendorf, of the University of New South Wales, was critical of government assistance for coal-fired power stations. New coal-fired plants would also affect plans for gas-fired power stations.
