Farm skills fail to make the grade.

Mar 28, 2007 (The Weekly Times - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Financial incentives awarded to other trades are not given to farm apprentices and trainees. Apprentice gasfitters and plumbers, for instance, receive $A800 for tools and payments of $A500 per annum for the first two years. The Department of Education, Science & Training explains that most farming industries are not classed as having a skills shortage. The Victorian Farmers Federation wants a review of the methods used to define a "skill" and the industries that qualify for incentives. The Federation's president, Simon Ramsay, says the farming sector is desperately short of staff.
