Mar 18, 2007 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Queensland outback mining town of Mt Isa has lead levels 33 times greater than minimal levels set by the Government. A study undertaken by Macquarie University found lead levels of 9,980 parts per million (ppm) when the trigger for a government investigation is 300ppm. Copper levels were at 12,110ppm on a government level of 1,000ppm, and zinc was at 11,120ppm on a level of 7,000ppm. Public health studies have found that a blood lead level of 10 micrograms per decalitre can lead to learning and behavioural difficulties in children. Mining processes have greatly improved, but the current exposure levels are the legacy of years of bad mining and waste management practices.
