Apr 01, 2007 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has unveiled a new initiative. It plans to send a warning letter to taxpayers who habitually send their tax return forms in late. Those who still do not heed the warning will get a fine of around $A110 per month while the form is outstanding, even if the taxpayer does not owe the ATO any money. Habitual late filers who have given their mobile telephone number to the ATO will get text messages reminding them to lodge their tax return on time. Around 20 of taxpayers always hand in their tax forms late, because they owe money and want to delay paying it as long as possible.
