Second-tier players push higher.

Apr 03, 2007 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Over the years to April 2007, Australia's regional banks have begun to venture into new areas. Such banks are generally suffering from narrowing margins, the result of intense competition from foreign banking operations. Some banking sector analysts have forecast a wave of consolidation among the nation's second-tier banking sector. However, it has been suggested that the Bank of Queensland's recent $A2.4 billion takeover offer for Bendigo Bank may be a move that goes too far. Concerns have been raised that the merger could create a conglomeration of two regional banks that have each evolved in different ways.
