Apr 29, 2007 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) -- RMIT University researchers are working on a vaccine that could be vital for Vietnam's fishing industry. A bacterial infection has been striking the freshwater fish tra basa, which is sold in Australian supermarkets as catfish. The bacteria is harmless to humans but may reduce the fish's size or even kill it. Microbiologist Peter Coloe, from RMIT's Victorian School of Applied Sciences, is heading the research in conjunction with a PhD student and Vietnamese universities, including RMIT's Vietnam faculty. The tra basa commercial fishing industry employs thousands of Vietnamese and is worth $A1.2bn a year.
