May 09, 2007 (The Weekly Times - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australia's new Federal Horticulture Code of Conduct is to take effect as from 14 May 2007. In the weeks leading up to its start date, there have been allegations that wholesalers have been forcing produce growers to sign backdated contracts, while for their part, some growers have been accused of acting in an intimidating manner towards wholesalers, a suggestion that has surprised Peter Cochrane from the Victorian Farmers Federation. John Martin, of the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC), says it has heard that some people plan to ignore the new code, but that anyone who does could find themselves in serious trouble under the Trade Practices Act.
