US data points to cut in rates.
Australasian Business Intelligence, May, 2007
Byline: Robert Guy
May 16, 2007 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- A further decline in housing demand and falls in consumer spending in the US may prompt the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates in mid-2007. The National Association of Home Builders' housing market index has fallen to the lowest point in its cycle, consequently shaving economic growth by one per cent. The pessimistic outlook for the mortgage market will continue, with the housing crisis causing shifts in consumer psychology. In addition, consumer spending is slow, with retail sales falling by 0.2 per cent in April. In the same month, the core consumer price index rose by only 0.2 per cent. In response, the Federal Reserve may cut interest rates.
