Business Services Industry
The sacred cow that couldn't be killed.
Australasian Business Intelligence, May, 2007
Byline: John Breusch
May 22, 2007 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The longevity of AWB has been impressive. The Australian Wheat Board was privatised in 1998 and listed on the stock exchange in 2001. Wheat exports were handled by a company called AWB International, but the strong administrative and organisational links between the two companies led to repeated accusations of conflicts of interest. A Senate inquiry into the relationship came to nought. Through all this the unwavering support of the National Party was invaluable. It took a UN report on bribery to stop AWB's growth and influence.
