May 21, 2007 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association has compiled new data on the use of pre-paid services. The figures show that 9.7 million of the 19.3 million mobile handsets used in Australia are connected on a pre-paid plan. Pre-paid products will now also be available for dominant telco Telstra's "Next G" broadband network, with two new handsets offering third-generation features at a price tag of about $A300. The new network had some 400,000 customers in February 2007 and is growing by 100,000 a month. Telstra will soon migrate users of the rural-based CDMA network to the new one, and close the former in early 2008.
