May 29, 2007 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Scientists believe a magnetic coil stimulates the brain and promotes the growth of new neurons. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is particularly beneficial, due to its positive effects on brain areas associated with learning and memory. Fortunato Battaglia, at the City University of New York, gave mice TMS for five days to find out whether TMS indeed triggers a process called long-term potentiation. Battaglia found that magnetic stimulation modified key glutamate receptors so that they stayed active for longer.
