Leaving the law.

Australasian Business Intelligence, June, 2007

Byline: Simone Jacobson

Jun 01, 2007 (Law Institute Journal - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Professional organisations should do more to help lawyers who decide to leave law. Karina Smith, lecturer in gender studies at Victoria University, says male lawyers are often disappointed with the competitive atmosphere in the legal profession and the lack of life/work balance. Law firms should offer lawyers flexible work practices if they want to retain talent. Young lawyers have a tendency to leave the profession when their wishes are not fulfilled. The Victorian Bar and the Women Barristers Association will conduct a study involving those who have left law since 1998. The aim of the study is to find out what were the reasons for such a decision.
