Jun 03, 2007 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- University of New South Wales (UNSW) vice-chancellor, Fred Hilmer, has defended a recent appointment. Hilmer's predecessor, Mark Wainwright, has been enlisted as acting president of the institution to supervise the winding down of UNSW Asia operations. The appointment is in spite of Wainwright's involvement in the previous management team. Meanwhile, Hilmer says the inaugural president of UNSW Asia, Greg Whittred, has stood down. Hilmer has signalled he will not take steps to establish an offshore campus during his own tenure.
