Jun 15, 2007 (Australian Journal of Mining - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Iain MacGill believes the world has perhaps only 10 years in which it can take action that will reduce increases in global warming to manageable levels. With the coal sector under pressure to develop "clean coal" technologies, MacGill, of the University of New South Wales, says it is important to define what exactly is meant by the term. He believes that any development towards clean coal must involve carbon capture and storage if it is to be effective. Alan Pears, of RMIT, says that targets for reducing greenhouse gases will be shaped by the level of temperature increases politicians indicate they are prepared to tolerate.
