Jun 18, 2007 (The Sydney Morning Herald - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, unveiled new broadband initiatives on 18 June 2007. The Australian Labor Party and Telstra have criticised the awarding of nearly $A1 billion to OPEL Networks, a consortium of Optus and Elders, which are subsidiaries of the Australian-listed Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel) and Futuris. According to the Labor leader, Kevin Rudd, the wireless technology of WiMAX is untested and may be subject to a range of problems in rural and regional areas.
