Jun 21, 2007 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Merger activity in Australia's health care sector is likely to intensify following the $A2.8bn takeover bid for Symbion Health. There is the potential for Sigma Pharmaceuticals to make a new bid for Australian Pharmaceutical Industries (API), while Colin Mackie of Tolhurst says API's pharmacy distribution business could be attractive to the private equity sector. Meanwhile, some analysts believe that international pharmaceutical groups could seek to acquire Australian-listed biotechnology firms, particularly those with advanced clinical trials.
