Asian rivals set research challenge.
Australasian Business Intelligence, June, 2007
Byline: Luke Slattery
Jun 24, 2007 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The University of New South Wales (UNSW) vice-chancellor, Fred Hilmer, has retreated from the vision of John Niland. The previous vice-chancellor for the 10 years to 2002, Niland influenced the then deputy vice-chancellor, John Ingleson, to predict on 27 October 2004 that the UNSW needed to accept the Singaporean Economic Development Board's proposal for a UNSW Asia project, in order to compete globally. However, Australian educational institutions are not as attractive to foreign student markets as once was the case. In higher education, Australia needs to improve its ranking in research, and the Jiao Tong index, to improve its position.
