Jul 03, 2007 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian sharemarket posted solid gains on 3 July 2007, with the S&P/ASX 200 rising 35.7 points to close at 6,299. The All Ordinaries Index finished 35.2 points higher at 6,333.8. A rise in the price of lead and copper bolstered the resources sector, with Rio Tinto gaining $A2.70 to close at $A100.70 and BHP Billiton up $A0.83 at a new high of $A35.88. Wesfarmers closed $A3.13 lower at $A42.60 after announcing that it will acquire Coles Group, whose shares eased $A0.50 to finish at $A15.62.
