Jul 10, 2007 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Monash University demographer Bob Birrell has released a report disputing Australian Government claims that there is no unmet need for tertiary places. He says universities are focusing on foreign students who pay full fees, resulting in the number of domestic graduates falling far below levels required by industry. Birrell says between 2001 and 2005 an extra 42,200 overseas students enrolled in Australian universities while the number of domestic students grew by only 8,700. He said it was unwise to rely on migration to meet the need for skilled labour.
