Dispute over demand for uni places.
Australasian Business Intelligence, July, 2007
Byline: Harriet Alexander
Jul 10, 2007 (The Sydney Morning Herald - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australian Education Minister Julie Bishop says a report claiming there are not enough subsidised university places is misleading. Bishop said on 10 July 2007 the study by Monash University's Bob Birrell did not take into account the strong job market or growth in vocational training. Birrell said many students did not have the financial means to undertake study, even though they may have qualified for a place. However Universities Australia said many potential students moved directly to the workforce, because they did not have a family tradition of going to university.
