Jul 16, 2007 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australian banks are now seeking to expand their branch networks. After numerous branch closures in the 1990s, banks are now moving back towards the face-to-face banking model. Despite the increase in the use of internet banking, banks such as St George Bank and the Bank of Queensland, have vowed to open new branches. The expansion of branch networks is noticeable to shopping centres, which have been overwhelmed by banks wishing to lease vacant shops.
