Complaints fall, debt deals faulted.

Jul 16, 2007 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Commonwealth Ombudsman received far fewer complaints from Australian taxpayers in 2006 compared with the late 1990s and 2000. Only 2,000 complaints were made in 2006, while 10,000 were registered in 1998-99. Complaints are still being made in relation to the way the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) handles tax debts. One of the cases involved a man who had received tax credits after the ATO deducted tax unnecessarily from his workers' compensation payments. The man showed pay slips to prove his employer had already withheld the tax. However, the employer denied that tax had been withheld. After a review, the ATO refunded the tax taken from the payments.
