Shoppers trade down, even within stores.
Australasian Business Intelligence, May, 2009
Byline: Jamie Freed
May 17, 2009 (The Sydney Morning Herald - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Echoing trends seen in the US with Wal-Mart, Australian consumers are increasingly shopping at cheaper stores, or seeking out more affordable product lines when staying loyal to the same retailer. Discount department store chain Big W has taken market share from upmarket David Jones. Rival Target is also responding by stocking more of the cheaper lines in its mix of products.
