Jun 09, 2009 (The Courier-Mail - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Redland City Mayor, Melva Hobson, has called for an extra $A1.9m in funding annually to preserve koala habitat. Hobson has warned that if the Queensland Government does not provide the funds to buy the habitat and prevent it from being destroyed for housing, one of the largest koala populations in Australia could be extinct by the end of 2009. New data indicate that koala numbers in the Koala Coast area fell from 4,611 to 2,279 between 2006 and 2008.
