GM unveils non-automotive hydrogen fuel cell.

General Motors Corp. unveiled a stationary hydrogen fuel cell last month that it said was created to provide back-up power for housing developments, businesses and hospitals. According to the Detroit, MI-based automaker, the cell is a clean, quiet, efficient power generator that runs on natural gas.
Though intended for back-up power, the unit will also be able to function in a more substantial role, according to GM. The company said the cell could enable homes or small businesses to operate virtually independent of the electricity grid. GM said it pursued the stationary fuel cell because most homes are heated with natural gas, which provides a ready market for the product.
