Dow overtakes DuPont as No. 1 chemical company. (Industry Newsline).

Dow Chemical Co., has overtaken E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co., as the largest chemical company in the U.S., according to an annual survey conducted by the American Chemical Society The Washington, D.C.-based trade group released the list last month, ranking producers by 2001 sales of chemicals and allied products, except pharmaceuticals.

Midland, MI-based Dow, which merged with Union Carbide Corp. in February 2001, posted chemical sales of $27.8 billion, up nearly 21% from 2000. Sales at Wilmington, DE-based DuPont, last year's top manufacturer, were $26.8 billion, down 5.7% from last year.
