Isuzu to leave Indiana plant next year. (Industry Newsline).

Isuzu Motors Ltd. said it will sever its manufacturing ties with the state of Indiana next year, when it ceases to produce its Axiom and Rodeo sport utility vehicles at its plant in Lafayette, IN. According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, the Tokyo, Japan-based maker of SUVs and commercial trucks said its 2,800-employee plant will shift production to Subaru cars when Isuzu leaves. In January, Isuzu sold its stake in the plant to Subaru, which will produce Axiom and Rodeo models at least through 2004.
The Lafayette plant has been Isuzu's main U.S. production facility since 1990. The small company (ranked 18th among world producers) has performed poorly in the U.S. recently, hampered by the weak Japanese economy and overpriced vehicles, according to...
