Dow to test fuel cells for power at its largest manufacturing facility. (Industry Newsline).

The Dow Chemical Co. said last month it had an agreement with General Motors to begin testing GM fuel cells to generate electricity at Dow's largest manufacturing complex, located in Freeport, TX. Dow said it could eventually use up to 35 megawatts of power generated by 500 GM hydrogen fuel-cell units on an ongoing basis. The Freeport facility manufactures polyethylene, polypropylene, emulsion polymers and other chemicals.

According to Dow, the size of the system would be more than 15 times bigger than any other known fuel-cell transaction. GM said each fuel cell was expected to exceed 8,000 hours of operation by 2010.
