U.S. backs clean-coal technology at energy conference.(INDUSTRY NEWSLINE)

Industrial Maintenance & Plant Operation, June, 2005

Speaking at the International Energy Agency (IEA) meeting of energy ministers in Paris last month. Department of Energy Secretary Sam Bodman called for more international efforts to develop clean-coal technology as an alternative energy source for power plants. He said the technology, still largely in the research stage, could reduce greenhouse emissions that contribute to global warming.

According to the Associated Press, Bodman's comments received little enthusiasm from IEA members, some of whom stated their reluctance to continue dependence on fossil fuels. Critics have claimed that clean-coal technology shows no promise of creating power plants that could run any cleaner than conventional facilities powered by natural gas.
