Long before terms like "continuous improvement" and "lean" were commonplace among manufacturers, North Carolina State University's Industrial Extension Service (IES) was on the job building interest in the theories behind them. Based at the main campus in Raleigh, IES was established in 1955, and based in concept on the university's successful agricultural extension program. At the time, North Carolina's manufacturing base was still built on three main industries: textiles, tobacco and furniture. It doesn't take a manufacturing expert to appreciate the prescience required then to recognize that these industries might one day change, and that something should be done to ensure the future of manufacturing in the state.
