The announcement of the forthcoming joint venture between Milan-listed Bulgari SA and Marriott International, Washington, caught the industry by surprise. In Barcelona, Luis Marco, GM of the 455-room Hotel Arts, operated by Ritz-Carlton Spain SL, a subsidiary of Marriott-owned Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co., says he would welcome a nearby Bulgari. Not only would another luxury hotel add prestige to the destination, but a Marriott sister hotel could be used as overflow.
Will other multi-brands go after this exploding boutique market? Eric Danziger, president and CEO of Carlson Hotels Worldwide, Minneapolis, says Carlson has no immediate plans. But, being a consumer-driven company, it will always consider and evaluate products and locations its customers want.
