HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL -- Lifted by the strong performance of its credit operations, third-quarter profits at Sears, Roebuck climbed by 17.8 percent, to $278 million from $236 million. But Alan Lacy, president and ceo, warned analysts on a conference call that the fourth quarter could be tougher, with earnings possibly headed lower.

"We continue to plan full-year EPS (earnings per share) growth in the low to mid-teen range," he said. "Given our strong performance year-to-date, this implies the potential for a down fourth quarter." Sales at the nation's second-largest retailer grew by 4.7 percent, to $9.6 billion from $9.2 billion, with merchandise sales and services growing by 5.0 percent, to $8.6 billion.
