Job layoff rate climbs to record-high level in March Climbing at a rate of 7,555 per business day, announced job layoffs climbed in March to an unprecedented level of 162,867, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an international outplacement firm that tracks job cuts on a monthly basis.
The March total was up 60 percent from 101,730 job cuts in February and almost triple the 55,783 recorded a year ago, in March 2000. March was the fourth straight month since December 2000, that monthly figures have exceeded 100,000 -- the first time such totals have been reached since Challenger began collecting job-cut data in 1993. During the first quarter of this year, 406,806 layoffs were announced, more than during the entire year of 1990,...
