When Blackwell's approached me about writing an Afterword for a new edition of Geoffrey Elton's The Practice of History (first published in 1969), my immediate reaction was to wonder whether it was really worth it. After all, the book, though widely used in teaching in Britain and the USA, is almost universally regarded as purveying an old-fashioned, indeed completely outmoded, view of its subject.
