When Germany invaded the Channel Islands on July 1st, 1940, I was a Post Office telegraphist operating the Jersey circuit in London's Central Telegraph Office in St Martin's-le-Grand, opposite St Paul's tube station. I am still in possession of the last message out of Jersey's main Post office before the lines to the outside world were cut.
