Virginia Berridge's article on alcohol in the May issue drew attention to the changing attitude of the medical profession. In the early 1950's I had to spend a short period in the military hospital at Saighton in Cheshire and every evening the nurse gave us the choice of a bottle of light ale or a bottle of stout as part of our 'medication'.
The guy sharing my ward had a half bottle of champagne prescribed because the MO had decided that he needed a special pick-me-up. Around the same time my unit was visited by a blood donation team and we were given a bottle of light ale or stout ...
