The picture of an 'Early cradle made by an Ojibway' (Frontline, August) requires further identification. The object is a tickanoggan. It was more a carrying basket than a cradle. It was borne by the mother on her back with a strap (or tump) over her forehead. A tickanoggan had the advantage that it could be stood against a tree or rock. If it fell forward the ...
