The engraving of the Alexis Soyer visiting Mary Seacole's British Hotel outside Balaclava (February 2005) prompts me to draw readers' attention to a fund to restore the Soyer tomb in Kensal Green Cemetery. This is now in a sorry state as the picture shows. Described as 'heaven born' by the Illustrated London News, Soyer was chef at the Reform Club for fourteen years before going to the Crimea, and was at least as famous as any member.
