Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Mapping Service (WMS) client and server support is now available from ESRI (California, USA) with the service pack 2 release of ArcGIS 9. An enhanced WMS connector is now also included with ArcIMS. The OGC WMS is an open standard specification for interactive mapping based on requesting map images from a server over the internet. Within ArcGIS Desktop, it means that users can access these services over the internet and add them to their maps as layers. ESRI is offering both a WMS provider/server and a WMS client/consumer solution.
